For New Rules, three guitars and three voices converge upon one stadium-size sound.

The London-based trio—Alec McGarry [vocals, guitar], Nathan Lambert [vocals, guitar], and Ryan Meaney [vocals, guitar]—elevate pop to the rafters fueled by singer-songwriter soul, rock ‘n’ roll spirit, and a whole lot of personality. After amassing tens of millions of streams, packing houses on tour, and earning global acclaim, the group level up again on their 2022 mixtape, Go The Distance [Elektra Records]. Working on music at home in London together, the mixtape serves as a snapshot into the boys’ lives, shining a light on the strength of their friendship and bond as a band.

“Ultimately, New Rules is three singer-songwriters who grew up busking and continue writing pop songs like the ones we used to mess around with on the streets,” observes Nathan.

“No matter what the production is, it comes back to the three-guitar sound,” agrees Ryan. “As we iron everything out, it becomes more recognizable as our own.”

“We all have different styles of singing and playing,” adds Alec. “When we put them together, it becomes New Rules.”

With Ryan from Ireland, Alec from Hertfordshire, and Nathan from Chelmsford, the boys initially met online, bonding over similar backgrounds playing music on street corners, uploading covers online, and penning original material. The musicians congregated in London and introduced New Rules with “Call It” and “Fix Somebody” during 2019. Beyond hitting the road with Julia Michaels, Little Mix, and Picture This, they sold out successive headline tours. Following the viral success of “Pasta” and “Emily,” they eventually caught the attention of Elektra Records and signed to the label in 2021.

Kicking off the next era, singles “Really Wanna Dance With You” and “Cheers” reeled in millions of streams. Entirely written and co-produced by the band, the 2022 name songs EP ignited a flurry of activity on TikTok. Meanwhile, they won over fans and critics alike, with Wonderland Magazine attesting the group is “set to become the next big thing.”

Along the way, New Rules assembled Go The Distance. The lead single and mixtape’s title track clearly illuminates their evolution. Produced by Sir Nolan [Selena Gomez, Tate McRae, Shawn Mendes] and co-produced and co-written with Kieran Shudall of Circa Waves, the track bounces between a slick bass line, handclaps, and glossy synths, culminating on an empowering and encouraging refrain, “Deep down I know we’ll go the distance.

“The phrase, ‘go the distance,’ has so many meanings,” says Ryan. “For us, it brings everything together lyrically. We deal with distance when we’re on the road and we’re away from our families. At the same time, the mixtape feels like the start of a new chapter. We hope the new music goes the distance—to number one maybe,” he laughs.

Then, there’s “Love You Like That.” Bass weaves around a head-nodding beat as the groove gives way to swaggering verses and an unshakable hook.

“It’s a different style of love song,” Nathan elaborates. “You’re being a bit cocky and telling a girl her new boyfriend will never be as good as you are. It was an interesting angle.”

The intoxicating “Drunk Texts” nods to country influences with a singalong hook. “It’s universal,” Ryan goes on. “We’ve all sent a text we regretted—some of us more than others (looks at Alec).”

In the end, New Rules are relatable, because they’re real.

“We tried to tell a story with the mixtape,” Nathan leaves off. “We’re talking about things that have happened to us. I hope you can listen to it and put yourselves in our shoes.”

“The music represents us,” Alec concurs. “Even though these songs might be a bit different sonically or thematically, they’re written by the same three idiots,” he chuckles.

Ryan concludes, “When you hear Go The Distance, I just hope you think, ‘This is New Rules. I want more!’”
