#MCDBehindTheLens Vol. 12 – Isabel Thomas

Isabel is an internationally published photographer based in Dublin, specialising in event photography as well as portraiture. Her work has appeared in print and online for New York Times ‘T Qatar’ Magazine, VICE, BBC, Festival Republic, MCD, as well as major outlets such as The Sunday Times, The Irish Times, The Irish Tatler and The Straits Times, among many others. She has also been a guest speaker at Dublin City University and Trinity College Dublin, for which she also worked on several assignments.

Always surrounded by music, fascinated by music journalism and usually found at or co-organising events, she started with portrait photography as a hobby during her school years in Germany.

Isabel quickly became a long-term contributor to music and subculture lifestyle magazines during her college years. In 2009, she joined Pfingstgeflüster as one of the main photographers for the magazine’s popular annual visitor feature of the world’s largest gothic festival, Wave Gotik Treffen, and expanded her interests further into music photography. Shooting for magazines in Germany and the Netherlands, she covered the world’s largest subculture festivals – Wacken Open Air and the aforementioned Wave Gotik Treffen -, as well as a multitude of concerts and major events such as the Leipzig Book Fair, Germany’s second-largest book fair.

Following her move to Ireland in 2013 as part of her masters degree, Isabel established herself as a regular contributor to a number of Irish magazines, most notably The Thin Air, and for her co-founded company beatvyne. In 2016, she was commissioned as production photographer for Festival Republic’s Electric Picnic and joined MCD as a music photographer later that year. On assignment for these clients she got deeply entrenched in the Irish indie music scene and also covered countless major gigs, festivals and events such as Lollapalooza Berlin, Web Summit, Forbidden Fruit, Body & Soul, With Full Force Festival, Vinyl Dublin, Dublin Tech Summit and many others.
