The Olympia Theatre, Dublin: Wednesday 16th January, 2019.
Neil & Liam Finn, the father and son duo, announce a string of shows through the UK and Europe in January 2019. The pair have just released Lightsleeper, their first collaborative album together after periodically sharing the stage throughout their careers.
Neil is known for his bands Split Enz and Crowded House (and now as the newest member of Fleetwood Mac). Liam has defined himself outside of the mainstream with three solo albums of sonic exploration, all the whilst retaining the family knack for melodic hooks and effortless song craft.
This tour sees them returning to the cities where the ideas for this album were first hatched after their first joint shows together in London and Brussels in 2015.
“After admiring each other’s works for the past thirty years and then revelling in our shows at the Shepherds Bush Empire, we felt inspired to create our own repertoire and encourage this new evolution in the family legacy,” says Neil.
Liam adds: “We starting mucking around not knowing what we were going to sound like and found ourselves cruising comfortably in a sultry lounge of cinematic soundscapes. During the process I became a father, Dad became a grandfather and we somehow unwittingly documented this generational shift in this sprawling music.”
These songs have now become the long-playing record Lightsleeper, an ambitious and emotional work reflecting this labour of love.
Neil & Liam, along with the family matriarch Sharon on bass, and Liam’s brother, Neil’s youngest son Elroy, on drums, will perform songs from Lightsleeper, along with favourites from back catalogues.
Always advocates for unpredictable, spontaneous live performances, the Finns will be bringing their conviviality and free spirit to these intimate venues “…improvising like only [a band] that’s spent a lifetime making music together can…(Sydney Morning Herald).”
Neil and Liam Finn have created an amazing body of songs as distinct artists and taken them to the world. Those songs have travelled into some remote and surprising places, along the way giving comfort and inspiration to millions.
“An outing that skillfully marries Neil’s insinuatingly catchy and melodic pop-rock with the more expansive and experimental jam-rooted music Liam has specialized in on several solo albums he’s released over the last decade.” – LA Times
“There have been a few father-son dynasties of note in rock, but not many who’ve actually made an album together as equals. A new entry into those rare annals is arriving in the form of Neil and Liam Finn’s debut as a duo.” – Variety
“Neil and Liam Finn combine their pop and avant-garde sensibilities in a work of genius.” – The Listener ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
“Ideal for late-night listening, “Lightsleeper” demonstrates that with talents such as these at hand, it makes sense to keep it all in the family.” – The Washington Post
